The chapel of Notre-Dame-la-Blanche

The Guérande audio-guided tour invites you to quiet contemplation before the chapel of Notre-Dame-la-Blanche, one of the eight buildings listed as Historic Monuments of the city, which stands proudly in the centre of the city.

A chapel dedicated to the Virgin

An inscription on its façade suggests that its construction dates from the year 1348, an older religious building having probably preceded it. It was the Duke of Brittany Jean de Montfort who decided its construction, dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the name of Notre-Dame-la-Blanche, in reference to her purity. The second treaty of Guérande is said to have been concluded here in 1381. Sold as national property at the Revolution, the chapel lost its religious function before being bought back and restored in 1853 by the priest Sorin, its spire being remade in 1913.

What there is to see

The chapel reveals its old architecture and its spire, witnesses to centuries of history and successive restorations. A place of faith linked to a major episode of Breton history, it can be discovered in contemplation and completes the rich palette of the religious heritage of Guérande. Its silhouette is one of the landmarks of the centre of the city.
