Commerce Basin Footbridge

You’re now standing above the Commerce Basin, originally built for recreational boating in 1791. The pedestrian footbridge below your feet was inaugurated in 1969, linking the City Hall district with the Saint-François neighbourhood. Designed by architect Guillaume Gillet, it later won an award for best metal structure, in recognition of how elegantly it fits into the cityscape. From up here, you’ve also got a great view of Le Volcan, the cultural centre whose bold, unexpected architecture catches everyone’s eye. Today, the footbridge is named after François Le Chevalier, former president of the Le Havre Autonomous Port Authority.
