Covered Market

Welcome to Agen’s Covered Market, located on Place Jean-Baptiste Durand, right in the heart of this food-loving city in the Southwest. For centuries, the people of Agen did their shopping in the open air on this very square. The first covered market appeared in 1832, a wooden hall later replaced in 1884 by the magnificent “Grand Marché” designed by the architect Lhéritier, inspired by Paris’s Baltard-style halls, with its 180 stalls and a 26-meter-high campanile. This metal jewel, a symbol of modernity, was sadly demolished in 1970 to make way for a concrete market-parking structure. But look at its rebirth today! After renovation works completed in 2019, the market has regained its soul. The metal façade you see here bears the image of the old hall as a tribute to its history. Inside, around twenty passionate vendors welcome you from Tuesday to Sunday with all the delicacies of the region. You’ll find the famous Agen prunes, foie gras from nearby Périgord, duck confit, goat’s cheese from Quercy, Buzet wines, and Agen tomatoes, not to mention specialties made with Armagnac. This market keeps Agen’s gastronomic tradition alive, perfectly blending heritage and modernity to make it the city’s beating gourmet heart.
