Queen’s Fort

The bastion you’ve just reached is called Fort La Reine. It began as an artillery battery installed by Vauban in 1694 after the first English and Dutch bombardments. Up until the 1740s, this bastion was known as the White Horse. It was then raised and linked to Saint Thomas Gate by a curtain wall. A curtain wall, by the way, is the section of fortification that joins two bastions or towers—because fortress vocabulary is not always the most intuitive. In any case, from here you now have a wonderful view straight across to Fort National.
