The ramparts and the Promenade du 21-Août-1944
The Mont-de-Marsan audio-guided tour leads you along the medieval ramparts and the Promenade du 21-Août-1944, a place where the origins of the town and the memory of its liberation meet.
From twelfth-century ramparts to the Liberation
Mont-de-Marsan was founded in 1133 by the viscount Pierre de Marsan, who endowed the town with ramparts to protect it. Built from the twelfth century, these walls were listed as historic monuments in 1942. The promenade that runs alongside them bears the name of 21 August 1944, the day of the liberation of the city at the end of the Second World War. This date recalls the fighting carried out around, notably towards the Bats bridge and the Luxey bridge, and the memory of the people of Mont-de-Marsan who lost their lives there. The place thus invites contemplation as much as walking.
What there is to see
The promenade offers a fine walk at the foot of the ramparts, between ancient stone and greenery. It combines the pleasure of strolling and the duty of memory, in homage to the liberation of the city. It is a peaceful place charged with meaning, which links the founding history of Mont-de-Marsan to its contemporary history.
