Saint Joseph district

On this side of the city lies the Saint Joseph district, a neighbourhood that holds a special place in Bastia’s heart. It hosts one of the town’s most cherished celebrations: Saint Joseph’s Day. Saint Joseph is one of Bastia’s patron saints, and the protector of families and craftsmen. Every year on March 19th, the district bursts into life to celebrate him. A traditional procession winds through the streets, with a statue of Saint Joseph carried to the cathedral, accompanied by Corsican religious chants sung in his honour. Throughout the neighbourhood, stalls offer panzarotti, sweet fritters made from chickpea or rice flour, a beloved treat that’s part of the tradition. The celebration draws hundreds of people and is one of Bastia’s biggest local events. If you happen to be in town at that time, don’t miss it, and make sure to try those famous panzarotti!
