Statue of Fanny de Laninon and Jean Quémeneur

This four-metre-high bronze statue is the work of local sculptor Jérôme Durand. It depicts two local legends, that is, the heroes of two sea chanteys long known to the people of Brest. One song tells the tragic story of Jean Quémeneur, a young man from the Recouvrance district, who drowned in the harbor because he married the wrong woman. The other song tells the story of a man in love with Fanny de Laninon, a waitress whose life was cut short in her own bar during the war. The sculptor chose to depict these two characters together in a single statue and in a rather symbolic way. Fanny is holding Jean, keeping him from falling into the harbor, where the song says he drowned.
