The Blois audio-guided tour presents the town hall, recognisable by its flags and the motto of the Republic inscribed on its façade. Located just behind Saint-Louis Cathedral, this fine building has not, however, always housed the town hall.

From a bishop's palace to the town hall

The site has known several conversions over the centuries. At its inauguration in 1700, the building housed the bishop's palace, the residence of the Bishop of Blois, whose diocese had just been created. Over time, the building changed its vocation to become the town hall, now housing the municipal services and the city council, in a prestigious setting inherited from its religious past.

What there is to see

The town hall, of classical appearance, is surrounded by the gardens of the Évêché, laid out in terraces above the Loire. Its façade and its setting offer a fine walk, a stone's throw from the cathedral. It is an emblematic building of eighteenth-century Blois, which testifies to the close link between religious power and municipal power in the history of the city.
