Quick side note before we move on—there are plenty of other spots around Bamberg worth a visit that didn’t quite fit into the main route. Altenburg towers over Bamberg from the top of its hill, and from its medieval ramparts the view opens wide over the city’s rooftops and the Franconian hills. This former 11th-century fortress, once a refuge in times of war and a place where E.T.A.

Hoffmann stayed, now offers a peaceful atmosphere of tall towers, ancient stonework and a much-loved Biergarten. As you head back down, Hainpark and its riverside forest invite you to take a break in nature, with long shaded paths, a small botanical garden and the quiet banks of the Regnitz, ideal for walking or running. Further south, Erbainsel, a green island set in the river, offers a tranquil setting where locals stroll along small footpaths and sit on benches facing the water.

Moving a little away from the centre, you reach the Brose Arena, a modern venue filled with concerts, sports matches and major events that reflect the city’s lively spirit today. Not far from there, the Gaustadt district reveals another side of Bamberg, more down-to-earth and authentic. Between its quiet streets and the Löwenbräu brewery, you can feel the deep roots of Franconian brewing tradition.

For yet another look at the city, the ERBA Park—created on the former industrial grounds of the horticultural exhibition—now offers wide lawns, playgrounds, riverside walkways and a viewpoint overlooking the canals of northern Bamberg. Along the river, Villa Concordia, an elegant baroque residence, hosts artists from around the world; its soothing architecture and gardens encourage you to slow down and take it all in. Cycling enthusiasts will also love the Main and Regnitz cycle routes, two major itineraries that wind through villages, fields and forests, perfect for exploring the surroundings at your own pace.

Continuing eastward, Litzendorf reveals a sculpture trail where contemporary art blends into the landscape, an unusual walk combining nature and creativity. Further on, you reach Franconian Switzerland, with its limestone hills, steep valleys, caves and castles—a true playground for hikers and lovers of the outdoors. To the west, the Steigerwald offers a different atmosphere, more wooded and gentler, with ancient forests, viewpoints and wine-growing villages.

Heading north, Bischberg—located at the confluence of the Main and Regnitz—invites you to enjoy peaceful riverside walks and a welcoming, simple atmosphere. And if you want to venture a little further off the beaten path, head to Buttenheim: this is where you’ll find the birthplace of Levi Strauss, the inventor of the blue jean. Now a museum, it recounts the life of this Bavarian emigrant who became a global icon.

Finally, east of Bamberg, Strullendorf and the Ziegelanger hills close this loop of discoveries with pretty paths, orchards, small chapels and wide panoramas over the Bamberg plain. In just a few kilometres, Bamberg and its surroundings reveal the full richness of Franconia—nature, history, traditions and unexpected surprises. So, with all this on offer, you’ve got plenty to keep you busy if you decide to stick around a bit longer.
