Bamberg Cathedral is the spiritual and historic heart of the town, and one of the great religious buildings of Germany. Founded by the emperor Henry II at the beginning of the eleventh century, it was rebuilt in the thirteenth century in a style of transition between Romanesque and Gothic, and stands out by its four high towers. Inside, it keeps major treasures: the famous Bamberg Horseman, an enigmatic medieval equestrian statue, the tomb of the emperor Henry II and the empress Cunigunde sculpted by Tilman Riemenschneider, and the only papal tomb of Germany, that of Pope Clement II.
