Green Market

You can see it, you can feel it — but above all, you can hear it. The buzz of the Inselstadt is especially alive right here. It’s a perfectly normal scene for this spot, because without even realising it, you’ve just stepped into the very heart of Bamberg’s city life — or as the locals call it, the Grüner Markt, the Green Market. For over a thousand years, this place has been drawing people in with the very same charms it still offers today — though, of course, in a slightly more polished form. There’s the Jesuit Church, a delight for the faithful. Elegant baroque mansions that stand as works of art in themselves. Shops and restaurants that keep the city’s commercial spirit thriving. And, most importantly, the weekly market that gave this square its name. From Monday to Saturday, traders set up colourful stalls overflowing with fresh produce, most of it from the region — a feast of flavours, colours, and aromas. It’s easy to get caught up in the flow here, drifting from one stand to the next, maybe even losing your bearings. Luckily, Gabelmann — “the man with the fork” — is here to guide you. That’s the locals’ nickname for the Neptune Fountain, created in 1698 by Johann Kaspar Metzner. Ever since its unveiling, it’s been Bamberg’s favourite meeting spot — and one of the city’s most recognisable symbols.
