Island District

Now that you’ve crossed two bridges — almost as if you were crossing borders — you’ve arrived in a new part of Bamberg. Welcome to the Inselstadt, the city’s historic and still very much vibrant bourgeois heart. Even though it’s surrounded by water, this is Bamberg’s main pedestrian zone, full of everything that comes with it. Here, you’ll find a shopping scene that’s becoming rare these days: small, independent boutiques tucked into historic buildings sit side by side with big-name trendy brands. But it’s not just about browsing the shops — this district is also a haven for food lovers. From stylish bars to fine dining, and of course traditional Franconian dishes where charcuterie, beer, and potatoes take centre stage, there’s something for every taste. Many of these regional specialties can also be found at the local market. Mixing students from Otto-Friedrich University with plenty of locals, the Inselstadt is always alive with energy. Just one more reason why this district is so loved by everyone who comes here.
