Prinz-Carl Palace

The elegant building before you is the Prinz-Carl Palace, a fine example of neoclassical architecture. It was built between 1804 and 1806 by the young architect Karl von Fischer for Abbé Pierre de Salabert, one of King Maximilian I of Bavaria’s tutors. In 1825, the palace was gifted to Prince Carl, the king’s son and close advisor. After his death, it took on a new role as the Austro-Hungarian diplomatic mission. Since 1924, it has served as the official residence of the Minister-Presidents of Bavaria, the heads of government for this German region. The palace stands proudly at the entrance of the Finanzgarten, or Garden of Finances, a small park that was at the heart of 17th-century Munich.
