The International Maritime Museum

You've now arrived in front of another impressive building, the International Maritime Museum! Spread across nine floors, this museum tells the full story of naval history, from military and merchant fleets, to civilian seafaring. Step inside, and you’ll leave feeling like a maritime expert. The exhibits cover everything from navigation and sail-making, to hull construction, fishing techniques, deep-sea exploration, naval battles, rescues at sea, lighthouses, cruise ships, and even the sinking of the Titanic. The museum is also interactive, offering hands-on activities like building model ships or testing your skills in a cargo ship simulator. Then there's the museum’s truly unique collection. In the “Treasure Room,” you'll find miniature ships carved from precious materials such as amber, ivory, or silver, and some incredibly rare pieces sculpted from bone. These were made by French prisoners locked away in ship holds, passing the time the only way they could, by carving into what we can only hope were leftover food bones. A fascinating museum, and a perfect fit for a city that owes so much of its identity to the sea.
