Viewpoint over the Regnitz

Every walking tour deserves a break, so let’s pause for a moment on the Obere Bridge. It’s here, more than anywhere else, that you really feel the unique charm of Bamberg. Take a look at the view waiting for us: right at the meeting point of the two arms of the Regnitz River stands one of Bavaria’s most photographed landmarks—the Altes Rathaus, or Old Town Hall. Perched precariously on the water, it surprises with its unusual mix of medieval and Baroque architecture. Its side walls are adorned with trompe-l'oeil frescoes that tell the fascinating story of why it was built right here. From the angle we’re offering you, the mustard-yellow half-timbered section really pops, adding warmth to the scene. Back in the day, that part next to the main building was where the guards’ heads lived. Nowadays, all this architectural beauty houses the Ludwig Collection—Europe’s largest porcelain collection, plus Strasbourg earthenware outside of France. So, if you’re a fan of fine tableware—or just love a good story about crockery—this is definitely your moment!
