Roman Agora

The construction of the Roman Agora began under Julius Caesar, the famous Roman emperor. It was completed two centuries later during the reign of Hadrian. It was designed to be an administrative, political and commercial center – essentially, it was the Roman version of the Athenian Agora. While smaller than its ancient counterpart, it's home to many important monuments of the Roman era, such as the Gate of Athena and the Tower of the Winds. At that time, the Roman Agora also housed shops, a market, a tower and an atrium. Simply put, it had it all! No wonder it was a favourite hang out spot for the Romans. Today, it's one of the most visited landmarks in Athens. As you walk through its ruins, you truly travel back to Roman times, when this was the busiest square in the city!
