The statue of Jon Sigurdsson

The Reykjavik audio-guided tour stops you before the statue of Jon Sigurdsson, standing on Austurvollur square, in the heart of the capital. This monument pays tribute to one of the great figures of Icelandic history, regarded as the hero of the country's independence.

The hero of independence

A 19th-century historian and politician, Jon Sigurdsson studied in Denmark before returning to Iceland as a member of Parliament, where he sat for thirty-five years, from 1844 to 1879. Through his journal and his writings, he defended the idea of an independent Iceland and became the leader of the national movement. His action laid the foundations of the long road to the country's autonomy and then independence.
