Fortezza di Santa Barbara

You’re standing in front of the Fortezza di Santa Barbara, an imposing fortress that still shapes the landscape of Pistoia today. It was built in the 16th century by the Medici, not just to defend the city, but above all to control it. An earlier Florentine fortress already stood here in the 14th century, but it was destroyed by the inhabitants themselves during a revolt against Florentine rule. Two centuries later, the Medici came back with a much more ambitious project: a modern fortress, designed to withstand firearms and, most importantly, to be impossible to overthrow. Take a moment to look at its shape. Unlike traditional medieval castles, it follows a star-shaped plan with angular bastions. This design allowed for better coverage of firing angles and stronger resistance to artillery, making it a perfect example of Renaissance military engineering. At the center, the large tower you see is older, dating back to the 14th century, and it was later incorporated into the complex. It was even used as a prison. Interestingly, despite its massive appearance, the fortress only faced one real siege, in 1643, during a conflict involving Italian states and papal troops. It held firm and was never taken. Over time, its military role faded, and it was used as a barracks, then as a prison. In the 19th century, Italian patriots were held here during the struggles for unification, and during the Second World War, the fortress was occupied and became the site of tragic events, including the execution of young resistance fighters. Today, the atmosphere is very different. The inner courtyard now hosts concerts, open-air screenings, and cultural events, making it a popular place to walk and spend time.
