History

The Garibaldi street is the lively artery of the Villanova district. As its name indicates, you find yourself here in the new town, whose architecture has nothing more to do with the medieval heart of the Castello: the shops follow one another and reveal a more modern version of the city. Since we are here, two words about the figure of Garibaldi, whose so many streets and squares you cross in France, in Italy and in South America. Joseph, or Giuseppe, Garibaldi was born in Nice in 1807, at a time when the city was French, following the campaigns of Italy of Napoleon I; Nice became Piedmontese again in 1814 and remained so until its definitive annexation to France in 1860. With the count of Cavour and Victor-Emmanuel II, Garibaldi is considered one of the fathers of the Italian homeland and one of the key figures of the Unification, proclaimed in 1861 with the creation of the kingdom and completed in 1870 with the attachment of Rome. This kingdom then bore the name of Kingdom of Sardinia and was led by Victor-Emmanuel II, duke of Savoy and king of Piedmont-Sardinia. Nicknamed the hero of the Two Worlds, Garibaldi fought in many military campaigns, in Europe as in South America.
