La Kalsa District

Slightly apart from the rest of the city, yet only steps from the sea, La Kalsa is a neighbourhood with an ancient soul that many visitors overlook. Its origins go back to the Islamic rule of Palermo, when the city’s emirs and their government made this area their home. The name “La Kalsa” comes from the Arabic Al Khalisa, meaning “the pure one” or “the chosen”, a name that reflects the neighbourhood’s original importance and prestige. But the story of La Kalsa took a harsh turn in the 20th century. During World War II, heavy bombing devastated the area, reducing much of it to rubble. Since then, La Kalsa has been slowly and steadily rebuilding itself. Today, it has a raw, authentic charm full of liveliness, character, and endurance. You can still feel the influence of its Arab-Sicilian heritage in the air. Just look at the powerful mural of an Arab woman painted across the building in front of you, a bold tribute to the neighbourhood’s roots. As you wander through its narrow streets, you’ll notice more street art scattered across the walls. These works are part of Palermo’s effort to breathe new life into one of its oldest quarters, celebrating its multicultural roots and spirit of hospitality.
