Piazza della Mercanzia

Standing proudly on this square is the Palazzo della Mercanzia. Built in 1391, it features a mix of brick and pietra d’Istria, a type of limestone that resembles marble. The building served as the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture, and Crafts. It was from its small marble balcony that commercial court rulings were once read aloud to the public. It’s a beautiful example of Gothic architecture, adorned with statues of Bologna’s patron saints on each side, and a central figure representing Justice. There’s even a hint of Florence in its design, thanks to the Florentine stonecutters who contributed to its construction. With its elegant architecture and rich colour, the Palazzo della Mercanzia adds charm and character to Piazza della Mercanzia. A true architectural gem that’s been watching over the city since the 14th century.
