Salaborsa Library

The idea for this project took off when Bologna was named European Capital of Culture in the year 2000. The vision was twofold, to give the city a public library worthy of its cultural heritage, and to open up access to the historic Palazzo d’Accursio, where the new library would be. Completed in 2001, the Salaborsa Library is absolutely worth a visit, not only because it’s one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, but also because it holds priceless treasures. Beneath your feet lie ancient ruins, visible through the glass floor of the entrance hall. These are the remains of old Bononia, which began as an Etruscan settlement before becoming a Roman colony. Some of the ruins date back to 189 BC! This public library offers a journey through time, that will delight both literature and history lovers.
