The San Miniato Gate dates from the fourteenth century and was part of the fortified wall that protected Florence on the left bank of the Arno. Unlike most of the gates that you glimpse in medieval towns, this one does not have a tower: it is simply an opening surmounted by a walkway, where the guards stood to watch the zone and control the passages. More modest than the neighbouring San Niccolò Gate, it has nevertheless kept its old character and its role of threshold. This gate allows to access the climb that leads towards the heights, in the direction of the Piazzale Michelangelo and the church of San Miniato al Monte, which crowns the hill. Still linked to sections of the old ramparts, it testifies to the medieval defensive system of the town.
