Sisto Bridge

We're now crossing back over to the other side of the Tiber River via the Sisto Bridge, opposite the Piazza Trilussa. This bridge, rebuilt by Pope Sixtus IV in the 15th century, came to replace an earlier one, probably destroyed in a major flood in 791. It's entirely pedestrianized, offering lovely views of the banks of the Tiber. This river, the third largest in Italy, is closely linked to Rome's history ever since ancient times. Legend has it that it carried the infant twins Romulus and Remus, the city's founders, to safety.
