The Rialto bridge

An emblematic stop on the Venice audio-guided tour, the Rialto bridge is one of the most famous symbols of the city of the doges. Before reaching this success, the monument went through a long and complicated history.

From boats to the stone arch

In the twelfth century, an assembly of boats linked together already connected the commercial Rialto district to the political St Mark's district. Impractical, this solution was abandoned in favour of a wooden bridge, which underwent several restorations and a collapse. In 1524, Venice finally decided to build a stone arch.

What to see

For this project, the designs of the greatest Italian architects, such as Palladio or Michelangelo, were consulted. It was finally Antonio da Ponte, one of the architects of the Doge's Palace, who won the project. Lined with shops, the single arch of the bridge offers a magnificent view of the Grand Canal.
