Tunnel

How about a little detour before you continue along the Via del Pallone? Now that you’ve come down from the fortifications, I suggest heading over to explore the underground galleries by taking the tunnel on your right. If the entrance is open you’ll be able to discover the passages designed to allow soldiers to move within the fortifications without being exposed to enemy fire. These vaulted brick corridors, equipped with stone staircases, underground shelters for ammunition storage and firing positions, will help you grasp the impressive thickness of the ramparts. While these passages served as air raid shelters for the population during the Second World War, they now host temporary art exhibitions.
