The Osaka audio-guided tour presents you with the Osaka Shochikuza theatre, one of the most important cultural places of the Dōtonbori district and, for more than a century, one of the great temples of live performance in the city.

The first western theatre of the district

Opened in 1923, the Shochikuza was the first western-style theatre of the district, with its neo-Renaissance façade that still contrasts with the bright signs and the bustle of the street. After a major renovation in 1997, the building kept its historic entrance while acquiring ultramodern equipment, such as a revolving stage and trapdoors, capable of hosting both traditional kabuki and contemporary productions. Due to the ageing of the building, the theatre was however due to close its doors in 2026, putting an end to a century of history.

What there is to see

Inside, the atmosphere contrasts with the tumult of Dōtonbori: red seats, marble walls and subdued lighting plunge the spectator into a world entirely dedicated to the stage. The neo-Renaissance façade, a witness to a century of performances, can be contemplated from the street. Given the evolution of its situation, it is advisable to check the state of the place and its programme before any visit.
