Pontochō Street

Pontochō Street is one of Kyoto’s most captivating lanes, a narrow alley about five hundred meters long that runs along the Kamo River, directly across from Gion. Created in the 17th century on land reclaimed from the river, it first served as a passage for merchants and travelers arriving by boat, before gradually becoming an entertainment district. In 1813, Pontochō was officially designated as a hanamachi, a recognized geiko district. In Kyoto, geishas are known as geiko, and their apprentices are called maiko. They are highly trained artists, skilled in dance, music, singing, refined conversation, and the art of hosting guests at traditional banquets. Behind the wooden façades you see here are ochaya, exclusive teahouses where geiko and maiko entertain, as well as okiya, the houses where young apprentices live and train. Pontochō is also famous for its ryōtei, elegant restaurants serving kaiseki cuisine, a sophisticated seasonal dining tradition where each dish is carefully prepared and beautifully presented. In the evening, red lanterns marked with the district’s bird emblem begin to glow, giving the alley a soft, almost dreamlike feel. You might be lucky enough to spot a maiko or geiko walking quickly to an engagement, recognizable by her kimono, white makeup, and carefully styled hair. Do keep in mind that taking photos of them without permission is not allowed. In summer, many restaurants set up kawayuka, wooden platforms built over the river, where guests dine in the cooler air while listening to the sound of the water. Each spring, the district hosts the Kamogawa Odori, a public performance where geiko and maiko take the stage to dance and present their art, offering a rare glimpse into a world that is usually private. Even in the very center of the city, Pontochō has managed to keep a sense of another time, shaped by dark wooden walls, soft light, and traditions that continue much as they always have.
