Pontochō alley is one of the most enchanting lanes in Kyoto: a narrow alley of about five hundred metres running along the Kamogawa River, facing the Gion district. A leisure lane of the seventeenth century

Created in the seventeenth century, Pontochō alley developed along the Kamogawa as a high place of leisure and entertainment. Lined with traditional wooden houses, restaurants and tea houses, it is closely linked to geisha culture. Even today, this pedestrian alley perpetuates the refined spirit of old Kyoto, between the river and the neighbouring Gion district.

What to see

You stroll here between wooden houses, lanterns and terraces overlooking the Kamogawa, in an intimate, timeless atmosphere. It is one of the most beautiful places in Kyoto at dusk, when the lights come on. The street, very narrow, is discovered on foot, taking the time to observe the traditional façades and the discreet bustle of the tea houses.

Pontochō alley lies between Shijo and Sanjo avenues, along the Kamogawa River, in the centre of Kyoto, reachable on foot. It is a pedestrian alley, freely accessible, to be walked on foot and with respect for residents and establishments. Very narrow, it is best savoured in the evening; it is best to avoid the busiest hours.
