The Shinobazu Pond

The Tokyo audio-guided tour has you take an alley that separates the Shinobazu Pond in two, the main body of water of Ueno Park and a haven of nature in the middle of the city.

Three lakes in one

The pond divides into several parts. To the right, the lotus lake, famous for its large collection of flowers that bloom in summer. To the left, the boat lake, where small boats often in the shape of swans glide. Further north, the bird lake shelters dozens of species, migratory or sedentary. Bordered by luxuriant vegetation and peopled with fish, ducks and turtles, it is a natural lake, although modified over its history.

What there is to see

A walk of about two kilometres allows one to go around the Shinobazu Pond, between lotuses, boats and birds. In the centre stands the Bentendo temple, on its islet. It is one of the finest natural spaces of Tokyo, ideal for escaping the urban bustle and enjoying the fauna and flora of the park.

Practical information

The Shinobazu Pond is in Ueno Park, in Tokyo. Its alleys and its banks can be walked freely on foot at all hours and on the level. The hire of boats on the boat lake follows its own hours and conditions.
