The Alto neighborhood is one of Puebla’s oldest districts, originally home to the Mixtec people before the Spanish arrived in large numbers. This is where the city was first founded, back in 1531. Over the centuries, it has at times been sparsely populated, and for a long time, it was considered unsafe, a part of the city that many avoided. But in recent years, thanks to restoration efforts and the stunning murals that now cover its walls, Alto has become a must-see destination in Puebla. You’ll find striking street art, beautifully preserved colonial houses, and traditional regional churches, all in a place that feels like stepping back in time.
