This bastion is dedicated to Saint Rose of Lima, a saint widely venerated in the Spanish colonies and often associated with protection against pirates. It stands as a symbol of defense and resilience. The structure has a pentagonal shape and was built from cut stone and sahcab, a traditional local mortar. Inside, a central patio with a cistern allowed water to be stored for the garrison, while three garitones, small watch posts, were positioned to monitor the surroundings and spot any approaching threat. In 1766, eleven iron cannons were installed here, ready to defend the city. Today, the Baluarte de Santa Rosa houses the Pinacoteca Campechana, an art gallery that displays works by local artists. The bastion no longer protects the city from pirates, but it remains an important place of memory and a lively cultural space.
