History

The history of the cathedral goes back to 1540, when the conquistador Francisco de Montejo had a modest church raised in honour of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, on what was to become the heart of the Spanish town. Over the centuries, this humble structure gave way to a far more imposing building: the construction of the current building began in the seventeenth century and was completed at the beginning of the eighteenth. In 1895, with the creation of the diocese of Campeche, the church was raised to the rank of cathedral. Its façade of light limestone, of a sober elegance, was deliberately conceived to remain discreet: at the time, it was better not to attract the attention of the pirates who scoured the coasts of Campeche, a prosperous and coveted port. Two towers frame the entrance: the oldest, on the sea side, is nicknamed La Española, while the other, La Campechana, raised in the nineteenth century, is adorned with a clock installed in 1916 that still works today. The cathedral thus testifies to all the colonial and religious history of the city, inscribed in the world heritage of UNESCO.

On entering, in silence and contemplation, you discover a refined neoclassical decoration. The nave, punctuated by great stone arches, leads the gaze towards finely sculpted altars, coloured stained glass and paintings of the colonial era. The floor, that weds marble and decorative tiles, adds to the solemnity of the place. The high altar, adorned with gilding, preserves a silver tabernacle of the eighteenth century, one of the treasures of the building. The cathedral also watches over precious objects of devotion, among them a moving representation of Christ in the tomb, carried in procession every Good Friday through the streets of the city.
