The statue you see here was created in 1937 by the Calderón brothers, sculptors from the city of Mérida. It is a tribute to motherhood and maternal love. The sculpture shows a mother breastfeeding her child, a simple and powerful image that symbolizes protection, care, and tenderness. This monument is especially well known for an unusual detail: one of the mother’s hands has six fingers instead of five. It’s a feature that many people in Campeche enjoy pointing out. According to local tradition, the sculptor, whose own mother was polydactyl, meaning she was born with extra fingers, included this detail as a personal tribute to her. The monument stands along the Paseo de los Héroes, a place where people often gather, especially during the Mother’s Day celebrations on May 10. On that day, many residents of Campeche come here to place flowers and honor mothers.
