National Art Museum

The museum in front of you retraces the history of Mexican art from the pre-Hispanic era to the early 20th century. It’s hard to miss such a striking façade when passing by this small square in Mexico City, which bears the name of Manuel Tolsá, the neoclassical architect who completed the Metropolitan Cathedral and designed the magnificent Palace of Mines. The National Museum of Art is the perfect place to understand how Mexican art has evolved over time since the Spanish conquest. In front of the museum stands an equestrian statue of King Charles IV of Spain, installed in 1979, adding further grandeur to this already impressive square.If you’re into Diego Rivera’s work, step inside to see some of his earliest works, as well as a wide range of traditional Mexican paintings. All this in a beautiful building built from 1905 to 1911, adorned with Corinthian columns, wrought-iron staircases, and exquisite ornamentation.
