Park of Santa Lucía

Santa Lucía Park is one of the oldest and most lively squares in Mérida’s historic center. It was laid out as early as the city’s foundation in the sixteenth century and grew around the Ermita de Santa Lucía, a small church built from 1575 onward for the residents of the neighborhood. Long neglected, the area was transformed in the nineteenth century into an elegant public park and officially inaugurated in 1878, taking on the appearance you see today, framed by large stone arcades. Since 1965, Santa Lucía has been especially famous for the Serenata Yucateca, held every Thursday evening, when musicians, singers and dancers gather to bring the trova and musical traditions of Yucatán to life under the open sky, in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Surrounded by restaurants, bars and lively terraces, the park has become one of the city’s most popular meeting places.
