Parque de las Puertas
You are standing at Parque de las Puertas, a promenade area located along Campeche’s Malecón, facing the Gulf of Mexico. This park is part of the large Moch-Cohuo recreational complex, a modern project that transformed this section of the waterfront into a space designed for relaxation and leisure. The name of the park, “Parque de las Puertas,” refers to the historic gates of the fortified city of Campeche. During the colonial period, the city was surrounded by defensive walls built to protect it from pirate attacks. Four gates allowed people to enter the city: Puerta de Mar, Puerta de Tierra, Puerta de San Román, and Puerta de Guadalupe. Today, only the first two can still be seen. The park also features a group of six fountains that are part of the nighttime show known as “Poesía del Mar.” This show combines water jets, lights, and music, and has become one of the attractions of the Malecón.
