San Juan de Dios Temple

It’s hard to miss this striking building with its vibrant ochre color standing out in the streets of Puebla! You’re looking at the San Juan de Dios Temple, which once stood beside an old hospital. Built between 1667 and 1681, it’s a fine example of the Herrerian style, the final phase of Spanish Renaissance architecture. This style is known for its strict geometric design and almost complete lack of ornamentation, despite the often grand scale of the buildings. The temple’s only flourish is its bold ochre color, which blends beautifully into Puebla’s colorful surroundings. Inside, you’ll find elegant Baroque altarpieces and stunning oil paintings that are well worth a look.
