Carpet Souk

The Souks of the Medina range from the spice souk, the leather souk, the potters' souk, the leatherworkers' souk and the carpet souk, which is one of the most renowned features of Marrakech and Morocco in general! Berber carpets, which are still sold in the souks to this day, have been manufactured in North Africa since the 7th century! Each carpet was made from sheep's wool, and was unique in terms of its colour, manufacturing technique and decorative motifs, making it possible to identify the tribe that had made it. The Berber populations used them as clothing, mattresses or blankets and used various dyes, derived from fruit, minerals and spices, to embellish them. To this day, tapestries are still widely customary in Morocco, and they come in all shapes and sizes! Some are still made using traditional Berber techniques. However, you should be wary if you want to buy one, as fake carpets are also sold in the souks, so be sure to be properly prepared before purchasing one.
