Shetland Larsen, in Bergen
At the end of the jetty, a tribute honours Leif Andreas Larsen, called Shetland Larsen, hero of the Norwegian resistance during the Second World War. The Bergen audio-guided tour stops here, with respect, to evoke this courageous sailor and the memory of the Shetland bus.
The hero of the Shetland bus
At the end of this jetty, let us make the acquaintance of the officer Leif Andreas Larsen, nicknamed Shetland Larsen for his active participation in the Shetland bus. If you do not know this action of the Second World War, it was a clandestine operation of the Norwegian resistance, that consisted in making secret maritime connections between the west coast of Norway, then occupied by Nazi Germany, and the Shetland Islands, in Scotland. Aboard disguised fishing boats, courageous sailors crossed tirelessly the North Sea, braving the storms and the enemy, to transport agents, arms and supplies towards the resistance, and to evacuate refugees fleeing the occupation. Leif Larsen was one of the most famous of these sailors, making very numerous crossings and becoming one of the most decorated heroes of the war in his country. This tribute, at the edge of the sea from where these perilous expeditions set out, honours his courage and that of all these men of the shadow. A place of memory and a tribute to a hero, Shetland Larsen is discovered with respect.
