Bait Al Zubair Museum

Here you are at the entrance to one of Oman’s most important private museums. The Bait Al Zubair Museum opened to the public in 1998 and is based on a collection brought together over several decades by the Al Zubair family, an influential Omani family known for their role in public life and its strong commitment to preserving cultural heritage. Unlike large national museums, this place feels like a group of traditional homes, offering a much more intimate way to experience Omani culture. The architecture is part of the story: thick walls, inner courtyards, carved wooden doors and carefully placed openings that allow air to circulate all reflect a way of life shaped by climate and local traditions. Inside, the collections exhibit powerful national symbols, especially the khanjar, the curved dagger that has become a national emblem, shown here in many regional styles and often richly decorated with silver. You’ll also see a wide range of traditional men’s and women’s clothing, revealing cultural differences between regions, along with a remarkable collection of silver jewellery, used not only for adornment but also as a store of wealth and an important part of marriage dowries. Everyday objects take centre stage too: pottery, baskets, utensils, coffee pots, incense burners and tools that reflect domestic life and traditional crafts of the past. Between the buildings, the gardens complete the experience, recalling the importance of water and the traditional irrigation systems known as aflaj.
