The Waljat Gate, in Muscat

The Waljat Gate is one of the four historic gates of the old fortified town of Muscat, near the Al Alam Palace. The Muscat audio-guided tour stops here to evoke this old threshold, through which you once entered the capital.

One of the four gates of the town

The Waljat Gate is one of the four historic gates that once controlled access to the old fortified town of Muscat. Located facing the Ministry of Finance, a stone's throw from the Al Alam Palace and the National Museum, it marks one of the thresholds through which you entered the town, from the Sidab district and the exterior zones. Like the other gates of the capital, it was part of an elaborate defensive system, which allowed to close the town at night and to control the comings and goings. Muscat, prosperous thanks to maritime trade, indeed had to protect its riches and its inhabitants. The Waljat Gate thus testifies to the organisation and the history of the fortified town, in the heart of old Muscat, surrounded today by the great monuments of the capital. A vestige of the defensive past and a historic threshold, the Waljat Gate is an interesting stop of the discovery of Muscat.
