Waljat Gate

Waljat Gate is one of the four historic gates that once controlled access to the fortified old city of Muscat. Located opposite the Ministry of Finance, just a short walk from Al Alam Palace and the National Museum, it marked one of the main entry points into the city for people coming from Sidab, Al Bustan or Qantab. At the time, Muscat functioned very much like a fortress. The sea and the mountains already offered strong natural protection, but the city was also enclosed by defensive walls, reinforced with watchtowers and punctuated by guarded gates. Bab al-Waljat played a very practical role: it filtered arrivals, monitored movement and allowed the city to be closed at night. According to local accounts, the gates were locked around three hours after sunset, and night-time movement was tightly controlled, sometimes requiring people to carry a lamp to move through the city. Take a moment to look at the gate’s architecture: its magnitude, fortified appearance and defensive features clearly show that urban planning here was above all about security and control of access.
