Before we wrap up, here’s a quick run-through of some other spots you might want to explore if you’ve got a little extra time in Funchal. A great way to start is by taking the cable car up to Monte, a charming hillside district that’s an absolute must-see. Up there, you’ll find a lovely church in traditional Madeiran style and the famous Monte Palace Tropical Garden, a 7-hectare paradise with over a thousand plant species from around the world. From Monte, you can hop on a second cable car to reach Madeira’s Botanical Garden, perched high above the city and offering breathtaking views. And for a truly unique way back down, try the island’s traditional wicker toboggan ride, the Carrinho, where skilled guides in traditional dress steer you down the winding streets to the city centre in just ten minutes. If you’d like to stay closer to town, head to Santa Catarina Park — a peaceful green space overlooking the port, with fantastic views over the bay. At its foot, you’ll find one of Funchal’s most visited attractions, the CR7 Museum, dedicated to local football legend Cristiano Ronaldo, showcasing his life, career, trophies, and memorabilia. For some beach time in summer, you can stroll to São Tiago’s pebble beach or head further to Gorgulho, next to the Lido bathing complex with its two saltwater pools. If you prefer a bigger stretch of sand and pebbles, Praia Formosa is your spot. For a taste of history, explore the São Pedro district, one of Funchal’s oldest neighbourhoods, dating back to 1595. If you’d like to venture beyond the city, just 10 kilometres away is Câmara de Lobos, the island’s very first village, now a picturesque fishing town by the sea. For incredible views, drive up to Pico Alto, one of the municipality’s highest viewpoints, just 20 minutes from the city, or make the 45-minute trip to Pico do Arieiro, Madeira’s third-highest peak and the most accessible, with a road right to the summit. From there, the Miradouro do Juncal offers one of the island’s most spectacular panoramas — perfect for sunrise or sunset, and sure to be one of your most unforgettable memories from Madeira. With all this, you certainly won’t run out of things to see and do if you decide to linger a little longer in the region.
