Aqueduct of São Sebastião

From here, you can already spot the silhouette of the Aqueduct of São Sebastião, peeking through the trees and passing cars. The original structure dates back to ancient Roman times, when it carried water up to Coimbra’s upper town. But centuries of conflict between Christian and Moorish forces left the original aqueduct in ruins. It wasn’t until 1583, shortly after the death of King Sebastian I, for the structure to finally regain its former glory. According to some accounts, the stones used in the reconstruction were salvaged from the ruins of the earlier Roman structure. Who said shopping second-hand only became fashionable in the 21st century?
