Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre

On your left, directly across from the Municipal Garden, stands the Baltazar Dias Theatre. Built in 1888 to replace the old Grand Theatre, which had been demolished decades earlier, this elegant building was designed in the style of classic Italian theaters, taking particular inspiration from the famous La Scala in Milan. The original architect, Tomás Augusto Soler, sadly passed away before construction began, so the project was taken over by José Macedo de Araújo Júnior, with Italian designer Luigi Manini and Portuguese artist Eugénio Cotrim handling the interior decoration. The theatre is named after Baltazar Dias, a blind playwright and poet from Madeira who lived in the 16th century and left a significant mark on Portuguese literature. Today, the Baltazar Dias Theatre is a true cultural landmark for the people of Madeira, showcasing the island’s rich artistic and architectural heritage and offering a beautiful venue for enjoying live performances in the heart of Funchal.
