These narrow lanes date back to the 15th and 16th centuries, when Aveiro was growing as a seaport, specialising in cod fishing. The boom in fishing led to a rise in population, and new homes were needed beyond the walls of the old medieval town. That’s how the Vila Nova district was born, now known as Beira Mar. Close to the salt marshes and the sea, it became home to many fishing families. Their houses had a distinct look, small, narrow, and often decorated with ceramic tiles. There’s typically one door in the middle, with two small windows on either side, just like number 15 on this street. In those days, the doors were always left open as a sign of trust and community spirit. Although life has changed, Beira Mar has kept its warm, local atmosphere.
