Clock Tower

Before we head into the typical Algarvian street on the right, take a moment to admire the tower just ahead. This is the Torre do Relógio, or Clock Tower. As the name suggests, there’s a clock on its façade, and a bell at the top, framed by decorative wrought iron added in the 20th century. The tower itself is actually much older, dating back to the construction of Albufeira’s medieval castle in the 13th century. Originally one of the defensive towers in the fortified town walls, it served both as a gateway into the city and a lookout to guard against attacks. The tower you see today isn’t the original version—it has been restored, renovated, and rebuilt over time. In fact, the tower and the building next to it once served as the town’s prison. Today, it showcases traditional Algarve architecture, offering a glimpse into the city’s rich past. Let’s move a little closer for a better look!
