Courthouse

On your right, you’ll see the impressive building that houses Funchal’s courthouse. Its architecture is a fine example of 20th-century Portuguese administrative design — simple, functional, yet elegant — and it fits harmoniously into the cityscape, even though many of the surrounding buildings are much older. Located on Rua Marquês do Funchal, this is where the island’s criminal, civil, and administrative matters are handled. Right in front stands a striking statue of a woman holding a sword, symbolising the strength and rigour needed to uphold justice. Just next to it is Funchal’s Town Hall, which we’ll be visiting in a moment.
