Downtown Coimbra

Although the historic centre stretches across much of the city, Coimbra is divided into two neighbouring areas, each with its own character and story. You’re currently in the heart of the Baixa, the lower part of Coimbra. Once outside the old medieval walls, this vibrant district was home to the city’s working classes, merchants, and artisans. From the Praça Velha, the former beating heart of the city, a network of narrow cobbled streets still unfolds in every direction. Locals call it the Baixa, and it remains one of the most authentic parts of Coimbra.
