Monument to the 500th Anniversary of the Diocese of Funchal

The monument you see on your right is one of the most symbolic in the city—it commemorates 500 years of the Diocese of Funchal. This was a major milestone in history, as it was the very first Portuguese diocese established outside mainland Portugal, and at the time, it covered all the overseas territories under Portuguese rule. And during the Age of Discovery, those territories spanned across the globe! For a while, the Diocese of Funchal was actually the largest in the world, until more dioceses were gradually created elsewhere. This monument was unveiled in 2014, marking 500 years since the Diocese was founded in 1514. It celebrates Madeira’s key role during that era, when it served as a vital base for Portugal’s maritime explorations, and highlights the island’s significance to the Catholic Church. That’s what you see represented here: the large religious cross and the sails evoke both the spiritual influence and the maritime history of Madeira.
