Outubro Tunnel

In front of you is an unusual tunnel leading to Peneco Beach, one of Albufeira’s central beaches. Hundreds of people walk through this passageway everyday to reach the sand and sea, especially during summer! This tunnel marks the end of Rua 5 de Outubro, one of the city’s main shopping streets. Do you know what “5 de Outubro” refers to? It translates to October 5th, 1910, the day that Portugal became a republic. A revolution broke out in Lisbon, and hundreds of Portuguese revolutionaries gathered in Marquis of Pombal Square protesting against the monarchy. The uprising was so big that King Manuel II and the royal family had to flee. The Republic was officially proclaimed at 11 a.m. on 5 October 1910, making Manuel II the last king of Portugal. In 1911, the current flag was adopted. The green represents hope for the nation, while the red pays tribute to those who fought for it. The yellow sphere symbolises Portugal’s maritime legacy, and the small shields represent the five Moorish kings defeated by Afonso I, the first king of Portugal. The seven castles represent the fortresses conquered during that time. Now you know the story behind 5 October, a key date in Portuguese history and a national holiday.
